Blue crabs are good swimmers. Their specially adapted pair of back legs are "swimmerets" that help move them effectively through the water.



2014 Festival of Lighthouses Contest

The Maritime Aquarium is now accepting applications for our 13th annual Festival of Lighthouses Contest this Fall. Visit for details.Display (and visitor voting) opens Nov. 22

Make plans to visit and see the entries in our 13th annual "Festival of Lighthouses Contest."  Lighthouses are new each year!

This year's exhibit will showcase 24 large model lighthouses, built by local artists, families, individuals and students, from Nov. 22 through Jan. 19. Enjoy these creative, imaginative works of art and then vote for your favorite.

The lighthouse with the most visitor votes will win the $1,500 first-place prize. There are other cash prizes for second- through sixth-places. Come and place your vote!

To lighthouse builders: sorry to say we have filled all 24 spots. Please save your lighthouse and enter next year!
