"We've taken a few educational boat trips over the years but yours was by far the best all-around experience. The highlight had to be the breadth of sea life we pulled up and investigated, interacted with and, of course, learn about."

Sand Tiger Shark Fun Fact

Look closely at the sand tiger sharks in the "Ocean Beyond the Sound" exhibit. Their snout and jaws are covered in tiny holes. These are receptors for the sharks' "sixth sense" – their ability to detect bioelectric fields emitted by other animals (including potential prey).

Field Programs

These exciting outings are conducted at local beaches, only around low tide. Students will get their feet wet! Wear boots or shoes that can get soggy, and dress for the weather! The 1:7 chaperone-to-student ratio applies.

Shoreline Investigators (PK-Grade 2)

The seashore provides young scientists with sensory opportunities for investigation and discovery. Students use their eyes, ears, hands and noses to gather information about plants and animals found in a variety of habitats within the intertidal zone. They explore how these living things satisfy their needs and rely on eath other in order to survive as part of the dynamic ecosystem found at the beach. 90 minutes.

Cost: $225 for first, $200 each additional (simultaneous or sequential). Maximum capacity of 60 students or 2 beach programs per day. We have beach locations in Norwalk, Bridgeport & Stamford, CT, and Pelham Bay Park, NY.  Extra travel, parking and layover fees may apply. School must supply beach-entry pass, if necessary.

Standards:
K: Next Gen., LS1.C, ESS2.D, ESS2.E, ESS3.A; Common Core, W.K.7, MP.2, K.CC, K.MD.A.2
Grade 1: Next Gen., LS1.C, ESS2.D, ESS2.E, ESS3.A; Common Core, W.1.7, MP.2
Grade 2: Next Gen., LS1.C, ESS2.D, ESS2.E, ESS3.A; Common Core, W.2.7, W.2.8, MP.2

Shoreline Scientists (Grades 3-5)

What better place for a first experience of field science than at a local beach? Students rotate through stations in different habitats of the intertidal zone, using scientific tools to identify organisms and make observations. They explore food webs, structures and adaptations that animals and plants use for survival, and how humans are impacting the shoreline. 2 hours.

Includes a 45-minute pre-visit lesson at your school where we will introduce students to the activities and equipment they will be using. The pre-visit will ensure your students get the most of the shoreline experience. Price includes field and pre-visit lesson. Additional travel fees for pre-visit lesson may apply.

Cost: $325 for first, $275 each additional (simultaneous or sequential).

Standards:
Grade 3: Next Gen., LS4.C
Grade 4: Next Gen., LS1.A
Grade 5: Next Gen., LS2.A

Shoreline Ecologists (Grades 6-8)

IMG 5955 copy 2

Equipped with the tools of an ecologist, students explore a coastal ecosystem of Long Island Sound. They conduct their own fieldwork, collecting fish, jellies, shrimp and algae with seine nets, and logging data on air and water temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen using scientific equipment. This hands-on experience allows students to be the scientists as they investigate the interconnectedness of organisms and the nonliving parts of an ecosystem. 2 hours.

Includes a 45-minute pre-visit session at your school, where we will introduce students to the activities and equipment they will be using. The pre-visit ensures your students get the most out of their shoreline experience. Price includes field and pre-visit sessions.
