Join "Storm Chasers" TV star Sean Casey and the researchers of VORTEX 2, the most ambitious effort ever made to understand the origins and evolution of tornadoes, on this heart-pounding science adventure. Armed with a 70mm giant-screen camera, a fleet of customized vehicles designed to withstand gale force winds, torrential rains and unrelenting hail, and an arsenal of the most advanced weather measurement instruments ever created, the stars of "Tornado Alley" take audiences on a thrilling quest to experience a tornado at point-blank range. Enjoy some of the most amazing clouds ever captured in IMAX® format.
Narrated by Bill Paxton.
Parental Guide: loud thunder and lightning, tornado destruction shown, one sad scene as a toddler is shown (with his parents) amid tornado destruction, no death or gore, brief aerial scenes that may make some people queasy.
Major funding was provided by the National Science Foundation.
“Sharks” is a family-friendly film that dives into the world of sharks with simple concepts, no scenes of predation, however death is shown and there is discussion of shark mating and violent behaviors (not explicitly shown). A sea turtle “narrates." It's presented by Jean-Michel Cousteau.
Audiences learn about adaptations that make sharks so unique among fish. And they also encounter manta rays, an enormous school of sardines, sea lions, jellyfish, dolphins and other creatures.
The film also faces up to stark shark realities: that the oceans’ top predators are horribly misunderstood and paying a deadly price for their reputation.
Celebrate one of the ocean’s most important – but endangered – habitats in “The Last Reef, Cities beneath the Sea” a new IMAX film bringing a beautiful kaleidoscope of fish, coral and other animals to the Aquarium's six-story screen. This passionate film emphasizes our connection with – and responsibility to – the complex ocean world.
By comparing coral reefs to cities, the film helps children (and adults) understand the complexity and interconnectedness of reef life. Especially in our area of the country, Maritime Aquarium audiences will identify with establishing shots of New York City.
The film’s stunning imagery immerses audiences in coral reef communities – among familiar dolphins, sharks and rays but also lesser-known species, such as crocodile fish, colorful nudibranchs and delicate flatworms.
But we also learn how and why reefs around the world are dying ... and what we can do about it.
Family friendly. The film has no scenes of predation, blood or violence. There is an opening shot of the Bikini Atoll nuclear test, but no scenes of destruction. The message is perhaps a bit complex for younger children.
“The Last Reef” is 40 minutes long. It recently received the prizes for Best Music and Best Sound in the 2012 Giant Screen Cinema Association Awards.
An inspiring story of love, dedication and the remarkable bond between humans and animals, “Born to Be Wild” follows orphaned orangutans and elephants, and the extraordinary people who rescue and raise them – saving endangered species one life at a time. This heartwarming adventure will transport audiences into the lush rain forests of Borneo with world-renowned primatologist Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas, and across the rugged Kenyan savannah with celebrated elephant authority Dame Daphne Sheldrick, as they and their teams rescue, rehabilitate and return these incredible animals back to the wild. Narrated by Academy-Award® winner Morgan Freeman. Dove Foundation approved for all ages.
